Surviving Ladakh: My Personal Advice on High-Altitude Preparation

As a local tour operator who has been guiding travelers through the mighty Himalayas for years, I can confidently say this:

“Ladakh is not just a destination, it’s a different world – and to experience it safely, altitude preparation is everything.”

This blog is my personal advice – based not only on my own journeys but also on countless stories, learnings, and real-life situations we’ve handled while running Epoch Paratrips.

Understanding Ladakh’s Altitude

Ladakh lies between 10,000 ft to 18,000+ ft above sea level. At such elevations, the air is thin – oxygen levels are 40-60% lower than what your body is used to.

Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) include headache, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness, and insomnia.

Day 1 in Leh: The Golden Rule – DO NOTHING

When you land at 11,500 ft, your body needs to rest. Complete rest on Day 1 is essential:

  • Stay in the hotel
  • Hydrate well
  • Eat light
  • Avoid physical activity, alcohol, and smoking
Essential Packing & Medication

We advise all our guests to carry:

  • Diamox (with doctor’s consultation)
  • ORS, glucose powder
  • Oxygen canister
  • Thermal layers, fleece, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • Water bottle, snacks
Night-Time Symptoms: Don’t Panic

Altitude insomnia may occur. Use extra pillows, sip warm water, and breathe deeply. Avoid over-layering at night.

Safe Itinerary Planning

Ideal acclimatization plan:

  • Day 1: Rest in Leh
  • Day 2: Light local sightseeing
  • Day 3: Drive to Nubra
  • Day 5: Pangong
  • Day 7: Hanle or Tso Moriri

Ensure cabs are equipped with oxygen. Never plan back-to-back high altitude days.

Warning Signs of AMS

Seek help if you notice:

  • Persistent headache
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Confusion
  • Blue lips/fingers
  • Chest tightness
