The cab engine hums softly beneath me as we wind our way up the rugged Himalayan roads. The city noise is long behind us now. Ahead lies nothing but infinite mountains, icy winds, prayer flags dancing on cliff edges, and the silence of something sacred.
I’m on my way to Spiti Valley, and it already feels like I’m stepping into a dream.
🏞 Day 1 – Shimla to Kalpa: Where Mountains Meet the Sky
As we begin from Shimla, the air turns crisp and pine-scented. My cab driver—a cheerful Himachali named Sonam—plays soft folk tunes while navigating the steep bends. We cross apple orchards and sleepy villages until Kalpa welcomes us with views of the mighty Kinnaur Kailash range, golden in the setting sun.
The locals here live simple lives, but their smiles hold stories that warm you even in the cold. I sip on local apple juice and watch the mountains disappear into the night.
🏞 Day 2 – Kalpa to Nako: Silence Begins to Speak
As we drive higher, civilization thins out. The roads get dustier, narrower, but the landscapes—oh, they expand beyond imagination. Dry cliffs tower above turquoise rivers, and by afternoon, we reach Nako—a tiny hamlet nestled around a frozen lake.
I sit by the lakeside, wrapped in my jacket, absorbing a silence so deep it feels like meditation. No honking. No screens. Just wind, sky, and soul.
🕯 Day 3 – Tabo & Dhankar: Where Time Stands Still
The next morning, our cab rolls into Tabo Monastery, over 1,000 years old. I walk barefoot on its cold stone floors, surrounded by ancient murals and butter lamps flickering in the dim light. Monks chant softly in the distance, and suddenly I understand—Spiti isn’t just a place. It’s a prayer.
Later, we climb to Dhankar Monastery, built on a cliff so high, it feels like we’re floating. The view of the confluence below—the Spiti and Pin rivers meeting like two old friends—leaves me speechless.
🏔 Day 4 & 5 – Kaza, Langza, Hikkim, and Komic: The Heart of Spiti
Kaza is Spiti’s biggest town, but don’t expect traffic or cafes lined up. Instead, expect warmth—simple people, cozy homestays, and steaming bowls of thukpa.
From here, our cab takes us up to Langza, where a giant Buddha watches over the valley. Fossils lie hidden in the dirt beneath your feet, remnants of a time when this desert was a sea.
We stop at Hikkim, the world’s highest post office. I write a postcard to myself—a memory I want to keep forever. And finally, we touch Komic, the highest motorable village in the world. Altitude? Yes. But also, attitude—calm, bold, and endlessly beautiful.
🌌 Day 6 – Chicham Bridge & Key Monastery: Spiti’s Soul
On our way to Key Monastery, we cross Chicham Bridge, the highest suspension bridge in Asia. Beneath it, a canyon so deep, it makes your heart race. Above it? Prayer flags, fluttering like messages between earth and heaven.
At Key, I sit beside young monks and sip butter tea. The wind howls outside, but inside, it’s warm. Peaceful. Eternal.
🌙 Day 7 – Chandratal Lake: The Moon’s Mirror
The journey from Kaza to Chandratal is like crossing into another world—dry desert transforms into lush meadows. When I finally see the lake, I freeze. It’s not just blue—it’s magic. The moon-shaped lake reflects every star above it.
I camp here tonight, wrapped in layers, watching the Milky Way swirl above me. I’ve never seen the sky so alive.
🏁 Final Day – Into the Mist of Manali
As we leave Spiti behind and descend toward Manali, clouds gather and the world softens. The trip ends, but something has changed inside me. In Spiti, I didn’t just see mountains. I saw humility, faith, stillness—and myself.
✨ Come, See What I Saw
This journey isn’t just about distance. It’s about depth. And I promise you, no matter how many places you’ve been—Spiti will stay with you forever.
