Ladakh is more than just a destination – it’s a dream for every traveller who seeks altitude, adrenaline, and awe-inspiring landscapes. Among its many attractions, the high-altitude mountain passes stand tall – quite literally – as symbols of adventure and endurance. Today, we take you on a virtual ride through three of the highest motorable passes in the world: Khardung La, Chang La, and the king of them all – Umling La.
1. Khardung La (18,380 ft) – The Gateway to Nubra Valley
Once touted as the highest motorable road in the world, Khardung La still holds a special place in the hearts of adventurers. Located around 40 km from Leh, this pass is your gateway to the mesmerizing Nubra Valley and Siachen Base Camp.
✨ Highlights:
- Altitude: 5,602 meters (18,380 feet)
- Located on the Leh–Nubra route
- Offers panoramic views of snow-clad peaks
- Army-run café and souvenir shop at the top
- Limited oxygen – stay hydrated and don’t stay long!
🚨 Tip: Always acclimatize in Leh for at least 2 days before attempting Khardung La. Carry Diamox if needed, and never rush!
2. Chang La (17,586 ft) – The Icy Challenge
Known as the ‘Pass of the Southern Moon’, Chang La is one of the steepest and coldest passes in Ladakh. It lies en route to Pangong Lake, making it a must-cross destination for every tourist visiting the famous blue lake.
✨ Highlights:
- Altitude: 5,360 meters (17,586 feet)
- Gateway to Pangong Tso
- Unpredictable weather – often snow-covered even in summer
- Home to Chang La Baba Temple – a revered spot
- Army medical post and tea point at the top
🚨 Tip: Be cautious of altitude sickness here too. The climb is sharp and the descent is even steeper – drive carefully.
3. Umling La (19,024 ft) – World’s Highest Motorable Road
Welcome to the top of the world! Umling La, near the Indo-China border, is now officially the highest motorable pass on Earth. Located in the remote region of Demchok in Eastern Ladakh, this one is not for the faint-hearted.
✨ Highlights:
- Altitude: 5,798 meters (19,024 feet)
- Connects Chisumle to Demchok near the border
- Offers views of barren landscapes and surreal skies
- Motorable even for bikers and SUVs – with proper permits
- Very little infrastructure – raw, remote, and rugged
🚨 Important: AMS (acute mountain sickness) is very common here. Do NOT attempt it unless well-acclimatized.
